As part of the Student Wellbeing Package, North Rockhampton State High School has a school-based psychologist available onsite to support student wellbeing. Our school-based psychologist works as part of our school's established Student Support Team to contribute to students' wellbeing and mental health.
The psychologist can play a role in supporting a young person's wellbeing in the following ways:
- Providing evidence-based therapeutic interventions through face-to-face sessions, telehealth sessions, or group-based sessions during the school term.
- Providing support and guidance for parents or caregivers caring for a young person accessing the school psychology services.
- Providing information about and supporting referrals to external service providers for students.
- Providing clinical advice or consultation in the school environment for students already accessing external mental health support.
- Providing staff training and professional development opportunities.
- Raising mental health awareness and promoting wellbeing at a school-wide level through events such as R U Ok day and Mental Health Week.
Our school-based psychologist can provide therapeutic interventions for young people who present with mild to moderate mental health concerns including but not limited to:
- Early indicators of depression, anxiety disorders, or obsessive-compulsive disorders.
- Self-harm or other ineffective coping strategies.
- Trauma, grief, and loss.
- Students with non-urgent risk of suicide.
- Students experiencing other significant changes in their social, behavioural, and emotional wellbeing.
Students who can access external mental health support services are encouraged to do so. Our psychologist aims to provide therapeutic support for students who face barriers to external intervention including practical issues such as travel accessibility, cost, or excessive waitlist times.
If you believe a referral is needed for your young person, please speak to their teacher or a member of our Student Support Team (Deputy Principals, Head of Departments, Year Level Coordinators, Guidance Officer, or Head of Special Education).
